Defects A YA Dystopian Romance A Dream Travelers Series The Reverians Book 1 eBook Sarah Noffke
Defects was my first novel by Ms Noffke. I did not know this was a spinoff of her Lucidite series. Maybe this is why it was a little confusing at first. I found myself asking "Who is this person?" or "What is she talking about?" Characters are introduced by name or nickname, but I have no idea who that person is or how they relate to other characters. For example, the second sentence of the novel is "I've never seen a ghost in it, but Tutu, whose gift is seeing the dead, says there are many who reside in our home." Wait...Who's Tutu? What gift is the author talking about? Another example, my first introduction to the character Rogue is "Rogue! What are you doing here? I thought you were dead!" I then spend the next few chapters trying to figure out who he is and how he relates to the MC. Finally, a character named Damien is mentioned but not explained. "He watches Damien ... too." "Damien might suspect..." It isn't until the third time he is mentioned (page 71) that I find out who Damien is. It is then that he's referred to as "Damien, your father..." It was parts like these that confused me and pulled me out of the story. My other complaint is how clueless and compliant the MC is. She grew up with her two best friends, thick as thieves, but she is completely obtuse when it comes to their feelings. When she finds out the sick truth and how evil certain characters are, she claims one thing, yet when the time comes, she hesitates. I found her very frustrating at times.
Because Defect is basically a good story with a premise I have not read before, I will give the next book a chance and hope that the MC grows as a character and that intros are better explained.

Rating 5 Out of 5 Stars
I was first exposed to Defects through David's Estes group. One day, a lot of the group's authors had their books on sale and I downloaded them all. I'm not going to lie, I had not heard of any of the authors who were on the list.
Sarah has a lot of talent and I think she will go far. The writing was just beautiful and just fit so great with the world. I did see a few typos, but they did not affect the storytelling at all. In fact, I bet most people didn't even notice them at all. We have the perfect mixture for a great story great world building, great characters, and great writing. On top of that, we have our big, scary government trying to control everyone. What's not to like? Fans of the Hunger Games and Divergent really do need to this!
The book's characters all have the power to dream travel and have other gifts. Those who don't are called Middlings. They all live in a society, where everyone is happy or supposed to be happy. Our main character, Em, of course, really doesn't fit into this society. Her gift has not developed and she prefers to spend more time with the Middlings than her own people. This, of course, is frowned upon. Her father, who works in the government, is very disappointed in his daughter and will do anything to see that she fits into the rest of society.
Em is a very likable character. She is also very strong. She is supposed to be rebellious, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that she really doesn't belong in her society. I think she sees all the problems in her society, but it's not until an old friend comes back that she really starts to understand just how bad things actually are and just how deep the problems run.
There is also mystery surrounding the book. We really don't know who the villains are in the beginning, even though we can kind of figure out who they are. Still, it is a great read! You will be on the edge of your seat as the characters just to piece together just what is going on in their society.
Again, here we come back in full circle, Sarah's writing is what keeps you hooked. The whole concept of the book isn't anything all that new, but her writing is just amazing. We have prefect pacing, prefect world building, and prefect characters. I just don't know how it can get any better!
This book was a nice surprise!! I thought the writing was very well done. I'm very character driven and Sarah is very generous with her characters. The world building was very good too. I think we're going to see even more of it in the next book (which I'm looking forward to reading).
This world is run by Reverians, they are people who posses gifts and the ability to dream travel. Sounds great, except that they are controlled and only allowed to dream travel on a schedule and are monitored. If they try to do it outside the rules they are severely punished. Then there are the Middlings, who do not have gifts or the ability to dream travel. They live in servitude to the Reverians. The President is the one controlling the society, and there are those Reverians who appear to not be developing their gifts when they reach the age, so they are classified as defects and have to receive a daily injection that they hope will cure them. Em, the main character, has been classed as one of those defects. Some of her family, her parents and older sister, treat her like they despise her and she is an embarrassment.
Em begins to question things. Then an old friend she thought was dead comes back and tells her enough to make her question more. Em is a strong, likable character. There were times I wished she would do things differently, but then I had to remember her perspective.
This was such a great read, and if it wasn't for the migraine I had for a couple of days I would have finished it sooner. I can't wait to read the next book "Rebel". I would have been highly recommend this to anyone who likes dystopian, fantasy and some romance too.
