A fast-paced action-adventure romance with a strong plot and very sympathetic Hero and Heroine. Definitely a book to buy and enjoy. The title describes the action plot, but could apply to the characters' first acquaintance, too. I like that play on words.
Having said that, the writing could be improved, if only slightly. There is some whining about "can't" get together which is resolved. Personally, I want a strong Heroine who is not hampered by knowing what she "can't" do. The only other minor complaint is that the villain was pretty obvious, which is okay, BUT the author did not have the Hero and Heroine figure it out until weeks after they got home. That is pretty weak, as was the scene where the villain was exposed. These two minor issues prevented the fifth star.
BUT this is DEFINITELY a well written book that I enjoyed and HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

As soon as I finished "Flash Fire" I knew I was going to read this one as well. I read this in a day in between working two jobs. I just couldn't put this one down. Glenn is not your typical hero but when you read the story and it unfolds it clear that he has the inner strength of lion. He is intelligent and as an engineer he is something of a McGyver (from the tv show of the same name). He is subjected to torture but he never loses his resolve to give up. Most civilians may have given up when we meet him in the story. Miranda is quite a complex character and she has a dark secret that keeps her from forgiving herself for an incident that happened to her recently before being dishonorably discharged from the Army. Miranda and Glenn knew each other in college but they were different people back then. They hadn't seen each other in 10 years and when they meet again the sparks fly, both good and bad. The story was taut and heartbreaking with some comic relief thrown in. The book as a page turner from start to finish and I had tears at the end. Both had come through so much only to find love again albeit a rocky road filled with twists and turns and just when you thought they were safe, something else happens! I hope, hope, hope, that there will be more about the group that Miranda works for, the Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit. You have a new fan Ms. Marton!
This is a great, spellbinding standalone novel that I didn't want to put down. The characters are well developed and likable and the storyline is sufficiently realistic to keep the reader at the edge of their seat. It maintains suspense and uncertainty to the very end. I highly recommend it.
Ten years ago, Miranda and Glen were lovers at MIT, where they were engineering students. But she left school and him and though it's been years, he finds she's the one thing he can focus on that overshadows the pain. Miranda joined the Army Corp of Engineers after her scholarship ran out and later moved into personnel recovery. Recently she was recruited by the Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit. She barely completed entry paperwork when she was told about two new cases. When she sees the name of the target on one, a body recovery, she tells her boss she knows him and asks for it. Because of her past experience, training is waived and she is quickly on her way to Venezuela, hoping the body she is searching for is still alive. Because it's Glenn Danning, her first love, who's missing.
This was okay. I enjoyed the survival in the jungle elements - I love that stuff. I liked that they had to think their way out of dangerous situations, and figure out smart ways to stay safe/fed/sheltered/etc.
I thought the hero was fine, if a little forgettable. I much preferred him during the survival in Venezuela part of the book. I liked his resourcefulness and persistence. But once they got out of the jungle and he turned back into the billionaire businessman I lost interest. Private jets and ridiculously unrealistic hotel rooms in Vienna (surprisingly) don't do it for me at all.
I found the heroine's wound to be a little inconsistent. Sometimes she couldn't be with the hero because of her dead husband and child, and sometimes because of her Big Secret (which wasn't connected to her dead family at all). It just made the heroine seem like she'd suffered an unnecessary amount of trauma. Otherwise, I liked the descriptions of her. I like that she was described as strong and lean and short-haired rather than 'curvy in all the right places'. It was a nice change.
Plus, I listened to this in audio, and the narrator's dialogue for the heroine sounded e-x-a-c-t-l-y like Lauren Holly, which was cool but distracting.
I'm interested enough in the set up for this company to read the next book, but hopefully that one has more of the survival stuff and less of the billionaire nonsense.
A fast-paced action-adventure romance with a strong plot and very sympathetic Hero and Heroine. Definitely a book to buy and enjoy.
