Unspoken A Mystery Mari Jungstedt Tiina Nunnally 9780312363772 Books

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I did not realize this was the second in a series, it can be a stand alone novel. This series takes place on the beautiful island of Gotland, off of the mainland of Stockholm, Sweden. Gotland is said to be a beautiful island with crime at a low edge.

It is late fall, with a few signs of winter, the Gotland police have a new muder case. Chief Inspector Anders Knutas and his team go to the home of Henry Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom was a man well known to most of those in town, an alcoholic, once a professional photographer. His wife and daughter had left him long ago. Once the case starts they find that Dahlstrom had a big win on the horses. The days after the winning, he is found murdered in the basement of his apartment block. It isn't until Johan Berg, a news reporter from Stockholm, returns to Gotland, that another lead is found. It also appears Johan's return allows him to resume his relationship with a married mother and schoolteacher, Emma.

At the same time a young girl, Fanny, a 14-year-old, enters into an affair with an older man. She feels helpless in ths affair, and she does not want it to continue. Her mother is an alcoholic and has severe mental issues, so tne affair is an escape of sorts. As time goes on, Fanny disappears, CI Knutas, now has two cases to deal with. The team wonders are they connected?

As Knutas and his team follow the leads in the two cases, we learn more about Knutas, his team, Johan, and Fanny. The story is told about Knutas's marriage, the ups and downs, and the relationships of those he knows. The characters are mature and well sketched out. We come to care for Knutas and his team. Johan and his married lover, Emma, seem an unlikely pair, but they do have a very strong bond. Gotland is a beautiful place to live, but the people we meet are so busy, they don't have time to enjoy this existence.

As the mystery continues, the ending is placed in our hands, without much information. I was suspicious because I noted the end was nearing, but the murderer does not fit into the novel, it feels pushed. This is a short novel as books go, a fast read. I hope the rest of the series gives me a more satisfying ending.

Unspoken A Mystery Mari Jungstedt Tiina Nunnally 9780312363772 Books Reviews

This book was a good read but not as engrossing as the first. The mystery was well played out but was a little disappointed by the ending. I will continue to read this author because her style of writing keeps you wanting more.
Sweden has produced another good mystery writer. Mari Jungstedt has written a compelling story with well drawn characters. A lover of Swedish crime novels will enjoy this book. I am looking forward to the third installment in this line.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I've read several Jungsted novels. Anders Knutas is fun to follow. Toss in the tv journalist, Johan, and his dream lady, Emma and you have a true read. I love Gotland. We visited Visby two years ago so I identify with the lovely walled city with its ancient cathedral. What a wonderful place to live!
great read! Kept me interested all the way through. A logical, but not obvious progression to the conclusion. Well plotted. Characters are believable & interesting.
Not as interesting or well-written as the first in the series and marked by the same flaw the police investigators are completely useless in these books. They collect evidence, sure, but they draw no insightful conclusions, conduct no revealing interrogations, and do little to nothing to narrow leads or pursue new ones. A dull way to do crime fiction. This is the last book I will read by this author.
Another great read from Mari Jungstedt all about the life and crimes of the people of Gotland Island, Sweden. This one is a bit more predictable; some common techniques from more conventional mysteries have crept into the author's toolbox. But the characters, their struggles and stories are still compelling. Deft touch at handling two mysteries in the same novel. All in all, better than average for a Scandinavian crime novel. And Jungstedt is quite a satisfying stylist to read -- straightforward and plain in a Hemingwayesque sort of way. On to more Gotland mysteries!
I am heartily sick of Johan and Emma! My GOD, do these two EVER STOP WHINING??? I like the character of Johan, but I do not like him at all in his pathetic persona of Emma's on again/off again lover. And Emma herself has no redeeming qualities. I've promised myself that I will not read any more in this series containing them.
And that is sad, because otherwise I liked both Unseen and Unspoken very much. Plenty of what I look for in a mystery Gloomy settings; lots of nefarious characters; dark humor; just the right amount of "spooky quotient"; red herrings( it being Scandinavia, lots of herring all around!), and our great detective - full of personal angst and self doubt.
Oh, if only someone would murder Emma!!!
