I enjoyed this book. It was different from your standard romance novel in that the author seemed more interested in creating the characters of the MCs more than advancing the plot. Oh, there was a plot, but it wasn't too complicated and there weren't too many twists and turns. I was actually impressed with how different J.J. was from the image he projected - sometimes the people you think are happiest...just aren't. I also loved to hate the villain (J.J.'s mother) - pure evil, ice water in her veins bad. Bad to the bone. Two things I wasn't crazy about in this book:
I felt that the actual love story wasn't developed enough. I just didn't "feel" that this was "the love of their lives". Perhaps it was "the lust of their lives". I wondered at times if they even liked each other.
The story made it SO FAR without a Big Misunderstanding, that at around 90% of the book, I was about to let out a sigh of relief...AND THEN IT HAPPENED! Ugh. It wasn't necessary, it derailed the story a bit, and it made me wonder just how much the characters could actually trust each other.
But these weren't huge flaws. I didn't think about them until the book was done. I did enjoy this story quite a bit - quick, simple and satisfying.

This book was so good I read it in one day, I could not put it down. The writing is detailed and flows continuously. The love and angst is remarkable in that the reader feels everything. I will definitely read other books by this author.
A story of family relationships & how complicated they can become when there are lies, deceit & dishonesty involved. What happens when a young girl from the wrong side of town falls in love with one of the towns rich boys & his mother involves herself to "save" him.
The storyline of a high school romance gone wrong set the stage for a deeply moving novel. I loved the way the story unfolded as the present and past merged. Well-developed characters brought back memories of those dreaded high school cliques. I highly recommend this novel.
You can never go wrong with Nancy Bush's books. She keeps you guessing, and they are always page turners. I love her
books and always look forward to the next one. The characters in this books were interesting, and it is surely a book that
I will read again sometime.
I have read another book by this author, but was co written with her sister, so I thought this would be a great read like that one. This book was not at all what I thought it would be. Lots of type o's and mistakes. Will not buy any more of this type of books from this author, unless it is co written with her sister.
I found this story to be fairly predictable but charming in some ways too.
I did like the characters in the story; they were fairly well written. But I also found that at one point I got irritated at the main character, Sherry Sterling. She returned to her hometown with a purpose and once there she kept running away. The first few times were understandable because of her story but towards the end I just wanted to slap her and tell her to grow up. I did read it all in one sitting so it kept my interest enough to finish it all at once.
High school students from opposite sides of the tracks, JJ and Sherry shouldn't have had anything in common. He was a star athlete, popular, wealthy, with the big house on the water. She lived in a rundown fifties box of a house with her alcoholic father and her beaten down mother. When her father got tired of beating her mother, he beat Sherry if she wasn't fast enough. Her clothes were used and always a bit too small or too large. Sherry resented JJ's easy life and made sure that he knew she didn't worship him like everyone else.
But Sherry fascinated JJ. She always had, and he wanted to break through the deep freeze she gave him. During their junior and senior years, JJ pursued Sherry, and was pretty full of himself that he could have her and not have to say any mushy stuff or make commitments. Sherry, on the other hand, fell head over heels in love with JJ. She gave herself to him body and soul. But when other people started rumors, when Sherry needed him, JJ failed her completely. Sherry disappeared a month or so before graduation and JJ never knew where she went.
Fourteen years later, a young lady presents herself on Sherry's doorstep wanting to meet her birth mother. She also wants to meet her father who, of course, doesn't know about her. Her worried adoptive parents are relieved to meet Sherry and see that Mandy got a good welcome from her birth mother. But Sherry explains that she has no pictures of Mandy's biological father and isn't sure quite where he is now, so she will go find him and put him in touch with his daughter. Mandy's birthday is coming up in a few weeks, on Valentine's day, so Sherry promises results by then. Then Sherry sets out to revisit her hometown, somewhere she never wanted to go back to again. With the Herculean task of finding the adult JJ and dropping a bomb into his life.
There is a lot of character growth and development in this story and introspection into how we live our lives- taking the path of least resistance versus challenging ourselves. It also deals with the hurts dealt as young adults that last long into adulthood.
Heat factor moderate.
